Trophy Hunting: An Unnecessary Evil

The “Hunting Trophies (Import Prohibition) Bill” heads for Committee Stage in the United Kingdom House of Lords on 12 September 2023.

In response to tabled amendments to the Bill, the Humane Society International (HSI) UK has prepared a formal briefing – “Hunting Trophies (Import Prohibition) Bill – HL Bill 119, Briefing for House of Lords Committee Stage – commencin9 Sept. 12, 2023.”

HSI (UK) has also produced a video briefing “Trophy Hunting: An Unnecessary Evil” featuring “African conservation experts and community leaders:

People with a vested interest in trophy hunting use several arguments to defend it, including that it is a ‘necessary evil for conservation and development’. Humane Society International / UK put these arguments to African conservation experts and community leaders. This is their testimony.

We urge the UK Government, MPs and Peers to pass the Hunting Trophies (Import Prohibition) Bill without amendments, doing;

  • what’s morally right to protect endangered animals,
  • what they promised to do with their 2019 election manifesto and
  • what the majority of the British public want.

Trophy Hunting is not a necessary evil for conservation and development” – HSI UK

Let’s hope the proposed pro-trophy hunting amendments are seen for what they are, potential loop-holes that can/will be used to undermine any meaningful Hunting Trophies (Import Prohibition) Bill being legislated in the United Kingdom.
